[Fresh Hope] ASUU Strike may be called off within 24 hours

According to the latest report by the Nation Newspaper, the Academic Staff Union of Universities today said the ongoing strike by university lecturers would be suspended within 24 hours. Read the full Report below;

The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Wednesday said the ongoing strike by university lecturers would be suspended within 24 hours once the new resolutions reached with President Goodluck Jonathan on November 4 were accepted.
The union, however, described the statement credited to the Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, that ASUU was making new outrageous demands as “untrue and absolute lie.”
The union said it asked President Jonathan to facilitate the endorsement of resolutions reached with him and signed by high ranking government official preferably the Attorney-General of the Federation but not a permanent secretary.
ASUU said a representative of the body including the President of Nigeria Labour Congress, Abdulwahid Omar, would stand as witnesses.
The union said it wanted the N200 billion agreed upon as 2013 revitalisation fund for public universities to be warehoused with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and disbursed to the benefiting universities.
ASUU’s position was conveyed by the union National Treasurer, Dr. Ademola Aremu, while speaking with The Nation in an interview in Ibadan on Wednesday.
He said the union appreciated the intervention of President Jonathan but noticed that some of the resolutions reached with the President were not included in the letter sent to the union.
According to him, the supervising Minister of Education was economical with the truth by not telling Nigerians that apart from the N30 billion earned allowances released for university staff, the government was yet to release the N100 billion claimed to have been released.”

ASUU Strike Latest: Pro-chancellors order all Universities open

Committee of Pro-chancellors of Nigerian Federal Universities, on Tuesday, unanimously ordered immediate re-opening of universities across the country.
The communiqué signed by the Chairman of the Committee, Professor Kimse Okoko, was made available to newsmen late Tuesday in Abuja.
The communiqué was issued at the end of the committee meeting to discuss the protracted strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other issues affecting the Nigerian university system.
The communiqué stated that the decision to re-open the universities was unanimously agreed by all pro-chancellors in the overall interest of all concerned.
The pro-chancellors, in the communique, directed all vice chancellors to comply with the committee decision.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that the decision of the pro-chancellors was predicated on the earlier referendum held by various chapters of ASUU that voted 60-40 in favour of suspension of the over four months old strike.
They expressed dismay that all efforts to resolve the crisis, including the intervention of President Goodluck Jonathan, has failed.
The communiqué recognised “all effort by Federal Government to address the major issues involved in the strike action including the bold and the supportive intervention by Mr President.”
It also stated that the committee noted “with satisfaction the outcome of the referendum conducted in all branches of ASUU nationwide which voted 60-40 in favour of the suspension of the ongoing strike by ASUU.”
The pro-chancellors called for the understanding of ASUU and indeed all staff of the various universities in Nigeria.
This order is coming on the heels of polarisation that has already crept into the ASUU, following the meeting they had with President Goodluck Jonathan penultimate week.
Nigerians were amazed that the emergency National Executive Council meeting, held in Kaduna last weekend, came out with fresh conditions for suspension of strike after it was rumoured that a deal was struck with President Jonathan.
ASUU has been on strike since July 1 and the NEC meeting was to deliberate on the resolutions of various chapters of ASUU on whether the strike should be suspended or not based on the offers by the government.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that the pro-chancellors were aggrieved that even when majority of the members of ASUU want the strike called off, few elements in the union have refused to yield to the popular desire of the members.
Meanwhile, the crisis rocking the University of Lagos (UNILAG) chapter of ASUU, over its continued participation in the ongoing strike action by the union’s national body, worsened on Tuesday as the two factions in the crisis openly traded insults.
The congress, called on Monday, saw a sharp division in the chapter with a faction favouring a pull-out from the strike action, giving a week ultimatum to open the institution.
The faction also promised undisclosed further actions if the ultimatum was not met, after it held a separate congress following the disruption of the earlier one.

South Africa: After Long Walk to Freedom, Still Waiting for a Great Mandela Movie

analysis

How good, or bad, is the latest Mandela biopic? Let's put it this way - it has a new U2 song on its soundtrack.
Last year, there was a brief break in the clouds regarding the largely turgid history of the biopic. Steven Spielberg's Lincoln, with the first ten minutes and the last five lopped off, was an almost perfect depiction of a legendary figure.
Yes, it never strayed far from hagiography - history is written by the winners, and in this case, the winners were Yankee super-liberals like Spielberg - but it took the last months of the American president's life, in this case Lincoln's attempts to jam the thirteenth amendment through a recalcitrant Congress, and observed them minutely.
Spielberg and writer Tony Kushner mangled a few details, some of them libelously so, but buoyed by powerful performances and an otherwise careful script, it was a film about how a political genius operated the machinery at his disposal. In this, it was an unqualified triumph.
South Africa's Lincoln - our George Washington, our Mahatma Ghandi - is, of course, Nelson Mandela. You'd be forgiven for asking, "important fellow, but for heaven's sake, haven't we biopicked him...

Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) is planning to end the ongoing five-month strike mid-January next year, a faction of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) chapter alleged on Monday.
The faction, however, insisted that the closure of Nigerian universities by the lecturers must end this week.
Leader of the faction, Dr Adeyemi Daramola, a lecturer in the Department of English, Faculty of Arts accused the body of assuming oracular posture on the strike.
According to him, “The position of ASUU has not demonstrated original function of its rules which says “reports on agreement from the union universities’ branches should be collated and announced”.
“ASUU-NEC has assumed an oracular posture by its very poor communication to members, government and the Nigerian society.
“The target of ASUU is to call off the strike by mid-January of 2014 which is no longer a rumour in the domain of its members. We have postponed other meetings of this pressure version of UNILAG
ASUU to discuss issues and shall call a new one if ASUU-NEC fails to suspend the strike before the end off the week.
“If necessary, we shall take all legitimate steps to ensure that normalcy is restored to all the Nigerian universities as soon as possible, as the group would not accept the rumour

Teachers kick against compulsory computer loan

Secondary school teachers in Adamawa State are at loggerheads with the state Ministry of Education over a compulsory computer loan scheme which many teachers rejected as oppressive and an encroachment on their rights.
The state education ministry has refused to react to allegations that it ignored the fact that some teachers already own computers, denying them choice to buy computers from competitors as well as install extra applications relevant to their profession.
The commissioner claimed he was busy when contacted to get his response on the allegation.
Many teachers became apprehensive after a circular issued by the Executive Secretary of Adamawa State Post Primary Schools Board, Ayuba Njidda, instructed every teacher to collect a laptop computer on loan at N130,000 deductible from their salaries over a period of 18 months, an arrangement they described as fishy and exorbitant.
The chairman of Adamawa State chapter of the National Union of Teachers (NUT), Dauda Maina, objected to the position, saying although he was part of the decision to facilitate the loan for teachers, he never supported the idea of forcing it on them.
In an interview with Daily Trust, the executive secretary explained that the loan was actually a voluntary one as agreed on at a meeting attended by officials of his board, the Ministry of Education,
He said the Commissioner of Education, Gabriel Hamma Adama, directed for the loan to be presented as compulsory so as to get the teachers to own computers for their personal development and improved productivity. He also defended the price, saying similar computers sell at N150,000 in the market.
“Because of the need to make our staff go for the computers, the Commissioner of Education directed

He said, “We do not discriminate on the basis of ethnicity or religion.
“We call on schools which restrict qualified pupils from being enrolled for academic activities on the basis of religion to desist from doing so, as it will plant seeds of discord among the people.”

Indian Student Commits Suicide After Parents Banned Her from Facebook

A 17-year-old girl from India committed suicide after her parents told her she had to stop using Facebook, police said on Friday.
Aishwarya Dahiwal was found hanging in her bedroom on Wednesday after an argument with her parents in Maharashtra state’s Parbhani city.
“On Wednesday night, she had an argument with her parents who told her not to just use Facebook and her mobile all day for chatting,” the officer from Nanal Peth police station said. “They told her to focus on her studies. ASUU, Call off Strike In honour of late Professor Iyayi

The death of a former president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Professor Festus Iyayi, is so painful. His loss is unquantifiable to the academic community in the country.
Professor Iyayi met his untimely death on the Lokoja-Abuja way while he was going to deliberate with other members of ASUU on how to find a lasting solution to the ongoing strike.
In response to the painful death, the ASUU leadership has announced an indefinite suspension of its NEC meeting which would have taken a decision on whether or not to call off the strike.
My letter is, therefore, addressed to the leadership of ASUU.
The easiest way to honour the late Professor Iyayi is to call off the strike without further delay.
The ongoing strike had claimed some lives, including Iyayi’s last week. Some students who were on their way home after the strike were announced were also involved in road accidents, which claimed their lives, while some suffered various degrees of injuries.
I also read it in the newspapers recently that some university students were arrested for robbery in Lagos and they laid the blame on the fact that they were doing nothing at home and were lured into armed robbery to keep themselves busy.
We should not wait until we witness more havocs before the strike is called off since nobody knows what’s lurking in the corner again.
Professor Iyayi has done his best, although the manner of his death is so painful and tragic. I, however, believe he would want an end to the strike as soon as possible.
As a result, I hope members of ASUU will call for the NEC meeting and agree to suspend the strike so that the innocent students will not continue to suffer in vain.

Free Education In Delta State Unchangeable, Gov Uduaghan warns School Heads

Delta State Governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan has said disciplinary measures would be taken against any primary and post-primary school head or teacher who is found to be collecting fees in any form from students.
According to the Governor, a task force has been established to monitor activities of teachers in the state to ensure that the free education programme of his administration was effective, asserting that education is free in primary and post primary schools in the state.
The Governor who dropped the hint at the weekend during the 26th year anniversary celebration of Word of Life Bible Church, Warri, warned that anyone found wanting would be made to face the full weight of the law.
“This state lays a lot of emphasis on education that is why we instituted a free education policy but our efforts are being sabotaged,” Dr Uduaghan said adding: “Some teachers and school heads are still collecting fees illegally despite the fact that government pays all fees for students including fees for external examinations.”
“We have a task force that is going round and any teacher or school head caught would be disciplined and if you are not caught, God is watching you and will punish you”, he added.
While congratulating the Word of Life Bible Church on its anniversary, Governor Uduaghan commended the church for awarding scholarship to 40 indigent students asserting that an educated society is that which can grow positively.
He admonished the recipients of the scholarship to be good ambassadors of the church by avoiding any unholy activity while in school, stating that the students will also benefit from the state government bursary programme if they meet the required grade points.
Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor at the occasion said the scholarship was a way the church encouraged the growth of education in the society, stating that “it is better to have many unemployed graduates than to have a society with uneducated people.”
“I believe we are coming to a time when graduates will be proud to work in every sector of the society,” the President of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) said.
Earlier, Prof. Gabriel Yomere who conducted interviews for the recipients of the scholarship said it was established that parents of the students cannot sponsor the scholarship recipients to school.

ASUU as a political party ! Is this true?

For over four months now, academic activities have been non-existent in universities all over the country. This is borne out of the fact that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has embarked on a crusade to comprehensively put the educational system of the country back on a sound footing. This is a commendable effort! It has however come to a point where an objective review is paramount. Noble as the effort is, it has come to a situation where an end is put to the casualties of this strike action.
As we talk now, many students have lost track of the essence of university education. Coupled with

Its unfair to blame Iyayi's Death on FG.

The Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on Youths and Student Affairs, Mr. Jude Imagwe, weekend, described as unfair and untrue, allegations that the Federal Government killed the late former President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Prof. Festus Iyayi.
Imagwu, shortly after he paid a condolence visit to the Iyayi family, said there was no doubt that Nigerians were shocked by the accident which resulted in Iyayi’s death, but that dragging the Federal Government into it “is quite unfortunate because President Jonathan has been doing his best to ensure that this ASUU strike was suspended.
“When you say government is to blame, it is like saying government has a right to take someone’s life. It is God that gives life and knows the appointed time to take life which is inevitable. And to also say that government is paying lip service to education is not correct either. That we have not got to where we need to get to in the educational sector, I will agree with you.
“Government is making progress gradually. Where we were yesterday is quite different from where we are today. The current administration is giving all it can and will continue to ensure that the educational sector is strengthened.”
He  recalled the role played by Prof. Iyayi when he (Imagwe) was NANS President in resolving disputes, which bordered on students’ welfare on campuses, noting that Iyayi’s fatherly counsel would be missed.
“The late former president of ASUU was like a father to many of us who were involved in student unionism.”

Students’ future hang in the balance as ASUU Strike lingers

Our hopes were high as we all earnestly anticipated our project defenses, dinner nights, send forth parties and our graduation ceremony, amongst other activities that accompanied the final year sessions. We had all numbered our days in the Lion’s den, UNN.
We all told our dreams and aspirations to ourselves and what we will all be doing in say, two or three year’s time. And our plans was almost materialising knowing that we had written our final year exams, done some clearance in school, submitted our projects and earnestly waited for defense.
Little did we know that the worst was awaiting us. Little did we know that our dreams and aspirations for the limited time we had was almost about to shatter. And it came as a surprise to everyone, like a lamb about to be slaughtered, ASUU STRIKE hit us all.
It came at the moment we never expected it; at the point where our future was about to be decided. It has been four months now after our exams, and everything came to a halt. Our project defense, dinner

ASUU STRIKE: AVOID BUREAUCRACY, STUDENT TELLS UNION

The General Secretary of Educational Management Students Association, AAUA Comrade Akinfolarin Akinwale(a.k.a BTG) has warned against the bureaucratic process in all sectors of the economy which often amount to delay in decision implementation.
He said the impulsive death of the former ASUU chairman was avertable and avoidable if the current ASUU Excos had met to just reveal and ratify the local chapters congress meetings and announce the aggregate result. He said since an agreement has been reached between ASUU and F.G and two-third of the total chapters was reported to have voted for suspension of the strike and that
the result and decision premised on the data should be announced either by the union president or General Secretary and not placing the whole system on hold on the basis of NEC meeting.
He described late Professor Iyayi as a man who gave his life in struggle and led by example in all ramification.
ASUU Should call of the strike to enable both the union members, students and notable stakeholders give him the last respect he deserves during his funeral by December. He further emphasized that no amount of money or delay in school resumption can compensate the loss of late Prof. Festus Iyayi.

ASUU to now hold NEC meeting Friday, Says Iyayi’s burial top priority

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may hold its postponed National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Friday to decide whether or not to suspend the indefinite strike it began since July 2.
A top official of ASUU, who preferred anonymity, disclosed this to Daily Independent in a telephone interview on Sunday.
He was, however, not certain if the NEC will still be held at the Bayero University, Kano where it was initially proposed to hold.
The leadership of the union postponed the scheduled Kano NEC meeting following the demise of one its key members, Festus Iyayi, who died last Tuesday in a ghastly motor accident on his way to Kano for the postponed NEC meeting.
The source noted that the union members are still grieved and are pre-occupied with the burial arrangement of the late Professor of Business Administration, who died along the Abuja-Lokoja highway in an accident caused by the convoy of Kogi State Governor, Idris Wada.
The source debunked speculations in the social media that ASUU has jettisoned its NEC indefinitely, saying the union postponed the NEC meeting as a mark of honour and respect for the late Iyayi.
According to him, all ASUU officials that were supposed to participate in the NEC meeting last week Wednesday had actually gathered at the Bayero University, Kano, but for the unfortunate accident which claimed the life of Iyayi and disrupted the agenda already set for the meeting.
Meanwhile, Supervisory Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, also at the weekend led a delegation of government on a condolence visit to the residence of the late academician in Benin City.
Wike assured that the Federal Government would diligently implement all the agreements it reached with ASUU in the course of the negotiations with President Goodluck Jonathan.
Those in the delegation of the minister include Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Julius Okojie, and some top officials of Federal Ministry of Education.
They also visited the injured ASUU National Welfare Officer, Ngozi Iloh, who is said to be responding to treatment at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin.
In a statement in Abuja on Sunday, the Minister’s Special Assistant (Media), Simeon Nwakaudu, said Wike solicited the permission of the family to allow the Federal Government participate in the burial
